Some unexpected moments abound in this otherwise generic horror film of shark attacks by action director Renny Harlin

Sharks are used in genetic engineering experiments to enhance a brain protein for use in Alzheimer Disease research. The genetic manipulation, however, causes their brains to increase in size. So, what do you get? Super smart sharks that don't like being cooped up. Forty-five foot sharks, I might add. And you guessed it, they'll do anything to get out of Aquatica, the facility run by Doctor Susan McAllister (Saffron Burrows).

These sharks know how to think so it's the humans trying to outwit the sharks and vice versa. Some very gory deaths occur, people being snapped in half and the like, gushing red water spouts. Yep, big time disgusting stuff.

But, the characters are good and the action keeps your interest. So, if you're into blood and guts or fishy horror tales a la "Jaws", I'm sure you'll enjoy this one too.

Also featuring Samuel L. Jackson, LL Cool J, Jacqueline McKenzie, Michael Rapaport and Stellen Skarsgard.

Lotta says: the "Deep Blue Sea" is somewhat predictable, but handled all quite well.
